In Memoriam: Sherilyn Gordon-Burroughs

It is with a heavy heart that the Texas A&M College of Medicine shares the news of the passing of Sherilyn Gordon-Burroughs MD, FACS, this past weekend. She was 48. Dr. Gordon-Burroughs was a well-respected transplant surgeon at the Houston Methodist J.C. Walter Jr. Transplant Center and was incredibly passionate about medical education & training. In her numerous roles with the Texas A&M College of Medicine, she was a strong supporter and leader of undergraduate medical education.

In addition, she was a cornerstone of our graduate medical education program and served as our first physician Designated Institutional Official, working tirelessly and in close consultation with the College of Medicine faculty to enhance education and training at Houston Methodist. Dr. Gordon-Burroughs also served as the Residency Director for the Department of Surgery.

Dr. Gordon Burroughs received her undergraduate degree from Howard University and MD from Washington University School of Medicine. After an internship/residency in surgery at Howard University Hospital, she completed a research fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and then general surgery residency at Howard University Hospital. She completed her clinical fellowship in multi-organ transplant at UCLA-Dumont Transplant Center. And 2009, she joined The Methodist Hospital.

Please keep her family, colleagues, and friends in your thoughts and prayers this morning.

Our office of spiritual care is available to offer any support through this tragedy.

Sherilyn was also a devoted and loving mother to her 4-year-old daughter, Jasmine. If you are looking for a way to help Sherilyn’s family during this terrible time, Houston Methodist has assisted the family to set up an account that will help support Jasmine and those caring for her now and in the future.

Contributions can be made at any Amegy Bank branch to the Dr. J. McStuffins Memorial Fund at Amegy Bank of Texas. Because the fund is a custodial account for Jasmine, contributions are not tax deductible. This is a meaningful and generous way to pay tribute to a great person, physician and mother.

For those wishing to pay your respects at the celebration of Sherilyn’s life, services will take place on Sunday, March 26, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm:
